Have We Really Engineered a Plane That Prevents Jet Lag?

Have We Really Engineered a Plane That Prevents Jet Lag?

Posted on December 4, 2019 by Troy Coulter

Hey guys, Matt here for Science or Fiction. Flying to far off destinations and exploring
a new city is great, except for the jet lag you inevitably get after you land. But that’s just flying, right? It’s not like you can just make a plane that
magically gets rid of all the physical effects of traveling through the sky at around 35,000
feet for several hours. That’s just some crazy fantasy that none
of us will experience in our lifetimes… it says that right there next to me doesn’t it. Yeah, thought so. If you’ve ever been on a long flight across
multiple time zones, you have probably experienced the unfortunate symptoms of jet lag. Simply put, jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder
that typically occurs when you cross two or more time zones. And there’s a pretty easy explanation as
to why it happens. When you take off from one time zone and land
in another, your body’s circadian rhythms can’t just magically adapt, because your
body still thinks you are in the time zone from which you came. This can leave you feeling irritable, tired,
and it can even cause stomach problems. Fortunately, it is temporary. It varies from person to person how long the
symptoms last, but typically it takes a day per time zone crossed before your body can
adapt to the new rhythm. But if you are going on a shorter trip, it
can also put a major kink in your travel plans. I mean, who wants to get all the way to Berg
en and be too tired to explore the exciting, second-largest city in Norway? Don’t you want to see this bird? How about this rack of sweaters? Now despite what this article seems to say,
there is no total cure for jet lag (some things just require time, guys), but Boeing has designed
a plane that can minimize its symptoms by using air pressure and increased humidity. Most planes are currently pressurized to simulate
the conditions a person would feel at 6 to 8,000 feet, which isn’t bad considering
that most planes fly between 30 and 40 thousand feet. But 8,000 feet is still a pretty high altitude
that can lead to symptoms like headache and nausea, similar to what’s called “altitude
sickness”. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family of airplanes
is pressurized to a new maximum level of 6,000 feet; 2,000 feet lower than most other aircraft. Altitude chamber tests show that because the
body absorbs 8% more oxygen into the blood at this altitude, passengers experience fewer
headaches and less dizziness and fatigue. That lower cabin pressurization is possible
due to increased use of composites. These new Airplanes are 50 percent composite
by weight. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer, also known
as CFRP, resists fatigue and corrosion more than traditional metals used to build planes,
and therefore allows for more internal pressurization.[1] CFRP also means that planes can withstand
more humidity. Metal can corrode when exposed to humid air,
but that’s not as much of an issue with the new material. Now, that matters to you because, while you
might not notice a change in humidity in the moment, you likely will notice that your throat,
eyes, and nose are less dry when you land. Now, again, these engineering changes don’t
cure jet lag, but the lower cabin pressurization and increased humidity will make you feel
more comfortable during your trip to Bergen. That being said, I’d sleep on the plane
if you can. Unfortunately, there’s still no total cure
for jumping time zones. For more epic stories of innovation that shaped
our future check out THE AGE OF AEROSPACE.COM Can you get jet lag flying on a helicopter? I guess then it wouldn’t be jet lag. Helicopter-lag? I know you would get a headache because helicopters
are super loud but did you know that there’s such a thing as a stealth helicopter. It’s a thing, check it out here. And as always, please like and subscribe and

Curing it is as easy as simulating the timezone of the destination right inside the plane 🙂
(Dimming of lights, Food on meals time of the destination etc )

Anyone not understand how this helps jet Lag? From what I know, Jet lag is when u go across many time zones and therefore when it’s 11pm there, ur body thinks is 6pm because it’s not a machine that can just “update its time”, therefore, ur sleep schedule is thrown off for like 2days. So how does making you feel more comfortable ON a plane make you have lesser symptoms of jet Lag?? There’s simply no way around it if u want to get to X country in a decent matter of time. Otherwise you’d have to stop in each time zone and catch up. Or maybe be sedated on the plane at intervals that would align with the current time zone’s regular sleep schedule. But then maybe u could just do it once for the final destination time zone, but then you’d probably lose a day. Unless they time it so that . Imma stop talking… k.

"Have We Really Engineered a Plane That Reduces Jet Lag?" would be the correct title, but I guess that doesnt give as many views.

Also, using plastics instead of metals to build planes sound like a very bad idea, climate-wise. We should be using less plastic, not more.

I've had chronic insomnia since childhood. I went to Japan 2 years ago, never experienced jet lag and the time zone difference (EST to JST) actually temporarily "cured" my insomnia while i was there. Never slept better, after a month I had to come back no Jet coming back either but the insomnia was back as soon as I landed

Science videos ALWAYS say "We did this", and "We invented that". I know I sure as hell didn't do anything and neither did you, and yet WE all take credit for a scientist(s) work. Then science videos also commit the heinous crime of CONSTANTLY just saying "Scientists discovered this", and "Scientist created that".

Scientist are hard working, and hard studying people who practically kill themselves experimenting all day long to figure out our world and make advances in knowledge. Yet they personally get NO credit because no one takes the time to find out their names. I find that disgusting, as scientists should not remain ambiguous after such break throughs, I believe they need more detailed and respectable media coverage.

I haven't gotten jet lag for years, and I have 1-2 short long haul trips and a RTW trip each year.

It is not that hard to avoid, provided you can sleep on planes, plan for the flight and change to the timezone you are flying to when you board.

The only flights where I have some sort of issue are the short 6 hour overnight flights going 1 or 2 timezones (eg SIN-HND) or the 11 hour day flights from Asia to Europe (eg NRT-LHR).

Video had nothing to do about jet lag prevention, it's just an ad, but the logic is so stupid I felt like I just raped myself by watching this video.
Yeah he clearly said that it won't help with jet lag(mid way through the video), so why tf would you put jet lag in the title and talk about it in the beginning? It's like yeah he clearly admitted this doesn't actually help with jet lag, it just makes you comfortable while flying, so you won't get headaches etc…but why even talk about it when there is no real correlation?
One could even argue that they knew this would make you wonder how they could make you not have jet lag on airplanes, which sounds ridiculous, knowing you would click on it just to make you watch this shit video.
I would rather have watched a funny advertisement, which still followed some form of logic instead of this stupid shit. Actually I would even feel good if you tricked me to watch an real ad, which would have been funny, instead of this hypocritical shit, trying to justify they put in an ad, and not just an ad, a shitty ad that made 0 sense. Fire the idiot who wrote this stupid script, jesus.

Obvious question, why not just boost the oxygen percentage in the plane so that the amount that's absorbed into the body at 6000-8000 feet is equivalent of what would be absorbed on sealevel earth? No extra pressurisation needed for that, just add a little oxygen from the oxygen tanks so it's up to say 25% oxygen in the atmosphere in there instead of the usual 21%. Would have the same effect wouldn't it

most symptons we've labeled as "jetlag" are caused by exposure to high levels of radiation higher in our athmosphere, 1 hour at 30kft equeals 100 full body x-rays. If they are thinking of fighting the exposure through actually protecting the passengers with smart engineering to some small extent, that should be possible. It's just not as cheap to Shield a plane with Led.

Really poor reporting construction and logic – Premise: Jet lag is caused by crossing time zones; Solution: lower cabin altitude and increased humidity. See the problem?

Start you story by introducing the problem being solved (low air pressure and humidity cause x,y and z symptoms when flying), not by confusing it with a separate issue that is not being addressed (flying has a negative affect on circadian rhythms). I really question the state of journalism when a "professional" can't construct a report that would pass a high school English class.

So, it prevents altitude sickness, not jetlag?

If there is no cure why claim you have solved a problem CFRP has a whole host of issues not yet fully understood to the engineering community

Hey that should also make the food taste better. For those who don't know the reason plane food tastes so bad is because of the low pressure and humidity not the quality of the actual food.

They should do an episode on just composites!! Maybe the cutting edge stuff I don't get to work with. Also maybe an intro to composites for those that don't know.
